Investing in Our Future:

The Campaign for Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital

Eastern Long Island Hospital Foundation, the philanthropic arm that supports Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH), recently launched its “Investing in our Future” campaign to aid facility projects designed to enhance the patient experience, provide greater comfort and create a more healing environment for patients on their healthcare journey.

“Investing in our Future” will assist in the advancement of our medical technology, restructuring and designing in some of our main areas, including the Behavioral Health Patient Unit in the Emergency Department and a newly enhanced Nutritional Services Department.

“SBELIH has a long-standing, rich history in this community and seeing the evolution and progress of the hospital over the years has been an absolute privilege,” said Paul Connor, Chief Administrative Officer of SBELIH. “These enhancements will give our clinicians and team members the modern tools and resources to continue to deliver the best care to our patients, close to home.”

SBELIH’s need for services and space have increased significantly in all three of these key areas particularly since 2020. From the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak through today, patient numbers utilizing behavioral health services are increasing. Similarly, as the crisis evolved, SBELIH needed to quickly expand its critical care capacity and equip the ICU with state-of-the-art technology.

We are continuing “Investing in our future” with the following projects.

Stroke of Hope: Building Our Future Stroke Center

At Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, we are committed to providing the highest level of care to our community. As part of our ongoing mission to enhance healthcare services on the North Fork and Shelter Island, we are excited to announce the development of a new Stroke Center.

Why a Stroke Center?

Strokes are a leading cause of death and disability in the United States. Rapid treatment is crucial for improving outcomes and saving lives. Currently, residents of the North Fork and Shelter Island must travel considerable distances to receive specialized stroke care. Our new Stroke Center will bring life-saving services closer to home, ensuring that our community members receive the immediate and advanced care they need.

For more information please call the ELIH Foundation Office at (631) 477-5164 or email Linda Sweeney, Vice President of Foundation/External Affairs at linda.sweeney2@stonybrookmedicine.edu.

The Physician Recruitment and Retention Fund

The core of our hospital mission is to meet the evolving healthcare needs of our community. Central to achieving this mission is the establishment of a robust physician network. While our aim has always been to build a well-rounded medical staff, financial constraints made it challenging. Joining Stony Brook Medicine and leveraging their physician network marked a pivotal shift, allowing us to make significant strides in creating a comprehensive local physician network.

Developing this network requires financial commitment from SBELIH. The positive aspect is that the network will be shared by Stony Brook and Southampton Hospitals. We will be responsible for supporting our part of the network, covering costs such as physician on-call coverage and sessional expenses. Subspecialties will operate part-time at various locations, including Peconic Landing Center for Well-Being, 222 Manor Place, Southold Primary Care, and Mattituck Advanced Primary Care.

To secure the necessary funds, we propose establishing a Physician Recruitment and Retention Fund through our Foundation. Our goal is to raise $10 million, enabling us to expand our local medical staff by 2-3 physicians annually. This initiative is crucial in fulfilling our commitment to providing comprehensive and accessible healthcare to our community.
