Investing in Our Future:

The Campaign for Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital

At the Foundation, it is our responsibility to raise funds to help maintain the hospital’s buildings and infrastructure and add new structures when the need arises. If we do our job well, then the trust you place in us is well spent. For generations, and more recently with the commitment of the Foundation’s dedicated assistance, the hospital has been able to provide the North Fork and Shelter Island communities with outstanding care in a loving, compassionate and family-centered environment for the past 118 years.

Hospitals operate 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. At Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH), we have been operating on this schedule for over 100 years. This places a great burden on our facility.

In order to maintain the high level of quality care that has become our hallmark and meet the unprecedented challenges of the future, we must upgrade our facilities to help our staff provide the highest quality of care to you.

That is why we are embarking on an ambitious philanthropic campaign…

The Physician Recruitment and Retention Fund

The centerpiece of our hospital mission is to address current and emerging healthcare needs in our community. Fundamental to this mission is the development of a robust physician network. It has always been our goal to develop a balanced and comprehensive medical staff, however, the medical economics were challenging and financially prohibitive. Only with us becoming part of Stony Brook Medicine and the associated physician network doing the calculating change have we begun to realize this major goal of a comprehensive local physician network. Building such a network will require financial participation on SBELIH’s part. The good news is that this network will be shared by both Stony Brook and Southampton Hospitals. We will have the responsibility to support our part of the present network. The costs include physician on call coverage as well as sessional expenses, as many of the subspecialties will be out here on a part time basis in various venues, i.e. Peconic Landing Center for Well-Being (open to the public), 222 Manor Place across from the hospital, Southold Primary Care, and Mattituck Advanced Primary Care.

To help finance this network we propose to establish a “Physician Recruitment and Retention Fund” through our Foundation with a goal of $10 million to increase our local medical staff by 2-3 physicians per year.

The Nursing Advancement and Engagement Fund

Nurses are the cornerstone of great healthcare. At Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, we want to see our nurses not only maintain their competencies but expand their expertise. Your support will help nurses pursue certifications in specialty areas such as emergency medicine, operating room and behavioral health to attend educational courses and conferences. Today’s nurses are deeply interested in actively improving their profession, and the Fund will provide in-demand opportunities for them to grow while helping attract and retain the most skilled and committed nurses in the region.

A Gift from the Heart

When you give from the heart, you know you’ve changed — even saved — a life. But a gift to the Foundation is also a smart investment in our community. Quality of life, property values and community spirit thrive when a region boasts a comprehensive medical center offering innovative technology, caring medical staff, and the most modern and effective treatments, facilities and services. As a privately supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Eastern Long Island Hospital Foundation relies on you to provide all this and more to our community. Your tax-deductible gifts are essential in the lives of our neighbors.
